The hot topic of the day in Singapore right now – the General Election. Almost every adult Singaporean (aged 21 and above) would definitely be exposed to the various campaigning going on, be it through the media, social media, house visits, walkabouts, banners and posters, etc. However, your pre-schoolers are not shielded from these constant messaging as well. They may be curious why every adult around them seems to be talking about this strange and abstract thing called the General Election. How then can you involve your young ones in this wonderful privilege that we as free and independent Singaporeans have?
Here are some simple concepts that you can relate to your pre-schoolers on how the General Election can be relevant to them. These can also be teaching points and life lessons. #1: No Man Is an Island The General Election is a period of time where we can explain to our pre-schoolers how Singapore is not built or run by a single person. One person would not have the time, nor the energy to do so. Instead, it takes a team to govern the nation. The different candidates take care of their own areas and constituencies, and that is how as a whole, Singapore is taken care of. Try this: An analogy to help little ones understand this would be using the concept of body parts. Each body part responsible for different things, such as the heart for pumping blood, the hands for holding objects, the eyes for seeing and so on. Together, they thus allow our body to function properly. #2: “Have You Ever Wondered Why We Must Serve?” When you see a candidate making house visits, you can highlight that this candidate probably made some sacrifices in order to do this. The candidate probably sacrificed his/her family time or time to rest. Share with your child that when we love our nation, we must be prepared to make sacrifices for her. When talking to your little boys, you can prepare them for the time when they would have to serve their National Service (NS). Explain to them that by sacrificing ourselves for Singapore, it does not mean one-way giving on our side. More often than not, as with most relationships fuelled by love, when we give, we find ourselves gaining so much more. Try this: Fathers can share with boys how they spent 2 of their prime years to serve the nation but gained so much more in return – friendships, fitness and emotional maturity. A meaningful sing-along with the pre-schoolers would be this Singapore Army song “Training to be Soldiers”. #3: Your Vote Is Secret If your pre-schooler is curious about your vote, take the opportunity to tell him/her that our vote is secret. Explain to them the importance of being able to keep a secret and the need to exercise self-control over our mouths.
Try this: A game of Taboo with the entire family can be an excellent way for the kids to practise not saying things that they are supposed to keep secret! Tell your pre-schoolers that election is a period whereby Singapore depends on herself to run our country. Relate the concept of “Independence” to the kiddos’ daily lives in kindergarten or childcare whereby they have to do things for themselves like putting on shoes and socks. Just as they do not rely on their friends or teachers for these self-help activities, Singapore does not rely on our neighbouring countries to run our country. Try this: Bring out the globe or the world map and identify Singapore’s neighbours as a family. #5: Play Fair Elections can be a period of time we pass down precious values to our young ones. Teach our pre-schoolers the importance of playing fair and respecting opponents in their daily lives. Tell them how we must always compete with integrity and sportsmanship. Try this: A heart-warming and cosy read-along of “Hare and the Tortoise an Aesop’s Fable” would be a wonderful way to bring across this point to the kiddos. #6: Giving a Voice to the Unvoiced When your pre-schoolers see on television how candidates serve the needy populations like the disabled or the elderly, take the chance to tell them that when the candidates are elected, it is their responsibility to represent the disadvantaged, highlight their concerns and help improve their lives. Share with them the importance of giving a voice to the unvoiced. Try this: A game of Charades would be an enjoyable way of bringing across this idea of “unvoiced” to our pre-schoolers. The General Election should not only be an exciting time for grown-ups. We hope that with these creative ideas, you can introduce your pre-schoolers to some of the major concepts in elections. Don’t miss out on these fun opportunities to engage your kids politically! By Rachel Lim. Like what you see here? Get parenting tips and stories straight to your inbox! Join our mailing list here. But if (and a big one at that) we had to eke out a silver lining to the situation, it would be the gradual acceptance that working from home can actually be a new reality for many employees. But while there are many obvious benefits to working from home, it does come with its own set of challenges. Changing your mental mindset to work mode on Monday mornings can be more difficult than you think – especially when your “work desk” is essentially just an arms length away from your very comfy bed. Sitting at your desk the whole day as well with a lack of movement can be an unforeseen hazard to your health too – getting the right keyboard, desk, and chair can be a much bigger deal than you think. To help you get your home workspace up to speed, I’ve put together a list of essential items that we’ve gotten good feedback on from colleagues and counterparts. 10 Essential Home Office Upgrades1. Cable Management![]() It goes without saying that having a well organised work desk can have a tremendously positive impact on your productivity. Other than clearing your clutter and organising your files, one thing that is a sight for sore eyes is stray cables strewn about the place. While cable ties can be an adequate stop gap solution, nothing can compare to the Eubiq Power & Data Management module. You could have possibly seen it before on a Facebook online video, but there is a reason why this has been showcased in many advertorials – it just works. Clad in a sleek metallic track and accented with a coloured LED, this power outlet system is really a brilliant option to have if being neat and tidy is something that you want to abide by – even at home. 2. Split Keyboard For Better Typing![]() Of course this is very much dependent on the nature of your job, but for those whose fingers never leave the keyboard much during the day – you’ll definitely understand the need for an ergonomic solution. If you’ve never used a split keyboard before, or let alone seen one, I do understand it may look weird the first time you lay your eyes upon one. But let me try and convince you of the merits of using one. The primary reason why split keyboards are a worthwhile investment is because they reduce ulnar deviation. This happens when the wrist is bent outward in the direction of the little finger, which then causes the carpal tunnel in the wrist to constrict. And when this constriction happens (let’s not go into details here), it is a painful thing you’ll want to avoid. Besides this, split keyboards are known to allow you to adopt a more natural position to better accommodate your body’s posture. Obviously, this is much better for you in the long run and helps to minimise strain and fatigue in the long hours that you sit there working. This particular split keyboard also features a compact design, which doesn’t take up too much space, and also has the benefit of it being a road travelling companion! 3. Minimalist Organiser![]() Unlike the first two, this minimalist organiser by Most Modest is more of a nice to have rather than a must have. Of course, there are much cheaper organiser options out there, but none are able to achieve as sophisticated a look as this one. Finished in a variety of 4 colours (the moss green is really quite something), it looks distinctive and will really help to complete the “I have it all sorted out” look on your work desk. It is constructed out of a durable powder-coated aluminium frame which should help it last the mile as well. 4. Desk Pad![]() Like the previous selection, this cork and leather desk pad has several advantages up its sleeve that is not apparent upon first glance. First, its sleek leather look definitely helps to give your work space a much more polished look. It is also a dual sided mat, made out of a unique blend of plant based cork on one side, and a high quality PU leather on the other. So essentially if you are tired of the dark smooth leather look, you can just flip it around to the cork side for a different look altogether. Lastly, it is made out of eco-friendly and sustainable materials – which is something definitely important especially in today’s world of waste. 5. Cleaning Up![]() This could be a bit of a stretch for some people in terms of its price tag. But for those who are into design and are more concerned about the look than anything else, this could be something of interest to you. Ever seen those red/blue plastic dust pans from your nearby neighbourhood knick knack shop? Well, this is the designer upgrade on that. While yes it is just used to sweep up dust or crumbs of food that might have fallen astray on your desk, it is hard to put a price on such well designed products sometimes! 6. Light It Up![]() Here is something that many people tend to overlook – the lighting conditions of your work environment. Studies have shown that natural light has greater effects on morale, energy and stress levels than you would think. Here’s a tip for you, a study published in the Journal of Sleep and Sleep Disorders Research showed that those who sat near windows (natural light) managed to get an average of 46 more minutes of sleep per night than those who didn’t. That said, not everyone will have the luxury of having a window in their study/office area – so for those people, artificial light is definitely better than no light at all. This LED table lamp by renowned designer Antonio Citterio is a really nice piece that is both functional and modern at the same time. It is an LED lamp (important for energy savings), and the warm, soft light that it effuses is surprisingly bright. 7. Throwing Away Waste![]() I guess you could say that this is in the same category as the wonderfully designed dustpan – it is at its core just a place to throw your rubbish. But if you’re the type that has dedicated some funds for a nice table, lamp, and chair, you might as well go all the way to complete the look of your stylish office. This wooden shell wastebasket designed by Jens Risom stands out from its peers with its sleek looks and slight levitational look – something that was purposefully designed atop its plastic base. 8. Telling Time![]() If you were thinking at first glance that this was a Herman Miller clock, you are actually not too far off from the truth. This minimalist clock by Howard Miller was actually founded as the Herman Miller Clock company in 1926 by D.J. De Pree (the founder of the Herman Miller furniture company). In 1937, the clock company was handed over to his brother-in-law, Howard Miller, who renamed it. While everyone uses their phone nowadays to tell the time, there is still something about looking up at a traditional clock at the end of an exhausting work day to see that the time you’ve been waiting for has come – in a stylish way no less. 9. Sitting Comfortably![]() There’s a reason why some chairs can cost in excess of 4 figures, and yet people are still willing to stump up the cash for it. And that reason has a lot less to do with the design and brand than you’d think. For those in the know, having a chair with the right ergonomics is probably one of the more crucial things that I would advocate on this list. Buying a cheap office chair might leave you with a heavier wallet, but you could end up with a bigger bill after heading to the chiropractor for shooting back pains. No exaggeration – it really does make a world of difference. If you’re gunning for something out of the ordinary, this Eames chair with its all black frame is a stunning example. 10. Portable Light![]() I’m sure we don’t have to go into the specifics of why light is important again (see number 6). Here is a table lamp by Hay that has a neat trick up its sleeve – it is a chargeable portable one. If you’re one of the fortunate ones that has a big enough house, sometimes working in one place constantly can get you down. Moving around, working in different spots can sometimes be stimulating and provide you with bursts of inspiration. So having a portable lightweight yet stylish light source to bring about with you is very viable with this lamp. It comes in three colours, but again, I am particularly taken in with this lovely Olive green colour. Visit the Stacked Store for more home products! When Zero Mobile (also known as Zero SG) discontinued its mobile services in December 2019, it promised a comeback with “new and modular pricing plans.” However, the firm never followed through with releasing any new plans. The Australia-based company had been Singapore’s second virtual mobile telco after Circles.Life since it launched here in 2017. The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) later suspended its license in March for the failure to “address outstanding billing disputes.” Besides an immediate suspension of its license, IMDA also blacklisted Zero SG and its directors. Fast forward about three months later, Zero SG released a media statement today (June 30) in light of the reinstatement of its license by IMDA. Zero SG’s License Is ReinstatedLooking back at its past journey, Zero SG’s CEO Glenn Mohammed admits that it has been fraught with challenges. He said that they were taken aback when IMDA “unilaterally and without advance notice” suspended their license over 12 customer complaints. While the firm thinks that IMDA’s reaction was “excessive”, they still respect IMDA’s decision and apologise for taking longer than they should have to resolve these complaints.
License Suspension Caused “Damage” And DisruptionAccording to Zero SG, the telco have been working to secure additional investment, restructure its organisation and relaunch its service in conjunction with a system upgrade with partners in Singapore. These changes were deemed to be “critical” to its project as it would have provided better prices, connectivity and fewer operational issues; ultimately benefiting the consumer. Amid negotiating and implementing these changes, IMDA’s abrupt suspension of their license has “jeopardised” their project. Negotiations were put on hold, the investment fell through, and it caused damage to their reputation. Glenn said that IMDA’s labelling of Zero and its directors as ‘blacklisted’ were “unjustified,” adding that they never received any notice about the blacklisting from IMDA.
What’s Next For Zero SG Now?Rounding up the media statement, Glenn implored IMDA to address “fundamental issues” that have stifled the growth of many local MVNO ventures, such as IMDA’s complaints process, credit reporting environment and market cannibalisation. Now that Zero SG’s suspension have been lifted, Zero SG intends to review its options and reconnect with their partners to explore the possibility of relaunching its services in Singapore. “We love Singapore and Singaporeans, and therefore we chose to invest in this market. It is our aim to be part of a more resilient, balanced, and a sustainable telecommunications sector in Singapore.” Featured Image Credit: Zero SG The post Zero SG’s License Is Reinstated appeared first on TinySG. The post GIGABYTE VIRTUAL SHOW TO PRESENT REAL-CASE SOLUTIONS AND EXPERT PERSPECTIVES TO BRING SMART TO LIFE appeared first on TinySG. Chances are that you may have already heard of the ultimate post-coronavirus travel deal. Yes, the Italian Mediterranean island of Sicily is offering to pay half the price of plane tickets and a third of hotel expenses, on top of free tickets to many of its museums and archaeological sites, for any audacious soul yearning to uncover the splendours of the enchanting region. Brimming with natural wonders and cultural treasures, Sicily is an idyllic holiday destination in its own right. We have curated a list of things to do in Sicily to make the most out of your sojourn. With that, come along and uncover the beauty of this captivating destination. You will realise this utopia is charming in every respect! 1. Hike Mount EtnaSoaring above the city of Catania on the island, Mount Etna is Europe’s largest and most active volcano. It stands majestically at 3,327 metres tall with a basal diameter of about 40 kilometres. Etna is believed to have sprung to life about 500,000 years ago when magma from the earth’s mantle poured out through the cracks and layer upon layer of deposits shaped its series of craters. Mount Etna can be explored year-round. Climb the summit with a guided tour to take in the otherworldly sights fancifully likened to a lunar landscape. However, keep in mind to put on a comfortable pair of trekking shoes and a jacket to brave the cold winds at high altitude – even during the scorching days of summer. 2. Take a day’s trip to CefalùNestled on the northern coast of Sicily, the seaside resort of Cefalù boasts an amalgamation of old-world charm and unending stretch of golden sand and pristine water. It is no surprise that this dreamy location has been dubbed as the most beautiful borgo (village) in Italy. There are a plethora of things to do when you are in this medieval town. Saunter along the cobblestoned alley to admire primeval fortifications offering a glimpse into the origins of Sicily. One of which is the Cathedral of Cefalù – an imposing building that was built between 1131 and 1240 housing exquisite Byzantine mosaics that has stood the test of time. Do keep a lookout for Lavatoio Medievale – an ancient wash-house used by locals well into the 20th century. Top it off by ascending to the peak of La Rocca to take in breathtaking vistas of the stunning coastline beneath you. 3. Savour the best Sicilian dishesSicily’s gastronomic smorgasbord is a delightful amalgamation of Arab, Greek, French, Spanish, and North African influences with a dose of Italian goodness, giving it a distinct taste. With a myriad of diverse dishes, be sure to try cannoli – an Italian dessert known throughout the world and has its origins in Sicily. The crisp shell oozes with a decadently creamy, sweet ricotta filling with every bite. If street food is your thing, arancini – a ball of risotto coated with bread crumbs and then deep-fried to a golden brown perfection – will keep you coming back for more. The shape, stuffing and spelling of this classic dish is unique in different regions of Sicily. Of course, this list isn’t complete without the mere mention of sarde a beccafico. Thanks to its extensive coastline, sardines are abundant on the island. To make them, mix breadcrumbs, pine nuts, and raisins and drizzle with olive oil and lemon juice, before baking in between fresh bay leaves. While it may be an unusual combination, the exotic flavours is sure to blow your mind away. Also read: 8 Dreamiest Towns in Italy That Will Steal Your Heart 4. Travel back in time at Valle Dei TempliMake a trip to Valle Dei Templi (Valleys of the Temples) to catch sight of what’s left of ancient Akragas. This archaeological site of classical Greek civilisation, just outside Agrigento, is on the prestigious list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. The sprawling park encompasses eight temples, and many other ruins, erected between 510 BCE and 430 BCE. Before we get to the must-sees, the question of why there are many Greek temples in Sicily may certainly arise. Well, various areas along the coast of Southern Italy were colonies of ancient Greece and they were part of what was Magna Graecia (Great Greece). So, what did ancient Greeks leave behind? The Temple of Concordia– the largest and best-preserved temple in the park standing almost as it did centuries ago, the Temple of Heracles – believed to be the first temple built in the site, the Temple of Juno Lacinia, Garden of Koleymbethera, catacombs, and necropolis amongst other residues of the past. Walking will be the ultimate way to explore the evocative remnants of ancient Greece in Sicily. However, make sure to put on a comfortable pair of shoes! 5. Relish the island vibes at TaorminaHeralded as the ‘Pearl of Sicily’, Taormina is an attractive hilltop town with a reputation for especially breathtaking views in the whole of Sicily. It stands prominently on the side of a mountain with Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea illuminating its backdrop. Trust us, Taormina is sure to take your breath away. Traverse the labyrinthine pedestrian-only streets and alleys at Corso Umberto and stop in your tracks to enjoy a cuppa at one of the cafes or restaurants dotting the teeming thoroughfares. It is an ideal way to live out your la dolce vita. Teatro Greco (Greek Theatre) is the most iconic feature of Taormina and deserves a spot on your itinerary. The ancient monument coalescing beautifully with the natural scenery is phenomenal. With copious leisure time to while, unwind on Isola Bella – a pebble beach that connects to a lush islet during low tide. The turquoise water and the glorious sunshine makes for the quintessential island escape. 6. Discover luscious vineyards in SicilySicily is a haven for wine connoisseurs. Thanks to its variety of grapes that flourish during temperate climate and the Italian mastery on the art of wine-making, nothing spices up your trip to Sicily more than a visit to local wineries. Alessandro di Camporeale in Palermo is where you can savour great wines while immersing yourself in the spectacular views that enshroud the area. It is located on a foothill, overlooking Mandranova plain. Grapes used to produce the wine are exclusively foraged from the estate. On the other hand, Feudo di Mezzo is strategically located on the northeastern slopes of Mount Etna. The winery offers degustations in its historic pressing station. You will be sure to perceive the distinct flavourful taste of the vino attributed to the mineral-rich volcanic soil. 7. Escape to the Aeolian IslandsSprouting impressively from the cerulean waters of Sicily’s northeastern coast, the Aeolian Islands is a volcanic archipelago comprising Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, Stromboli, Filicudi, Alicudi and Panarea. These corners of heaven have diverse offerings, much to the delight of visitors. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can soak in the therapeutic sulphurous waters at the open-air volcano mud bath in Vulcano. Alternatively, scale the volcano of Stromboli to observe an intermittent eruption up close, yet in relative safety. Otheriwse, you can visit Lipari’s archaeological museum or go off the beaten track at Filicudi and Alicudi. Salina is where you can tuck into good food while Panerea’s treasure trove underwater makes it a unique paradise for divers.
